Workshop Description:
All professionals working in the mental health field are subject to emotionally charged reactions to
work with clients. Among our most important ethical mandates as clinicians is to provide services to
clients in ways that maximize the likelihood of positive treatment outcomes and minimize possible
harm. Unacknowledged and/or inadequately managed countertransference has the potential to
negatively impact the treatment process, and working with addictive/compulsive populations may be
especially challenging at times related to issues such as stigma, value conflicts, personal history,
recidivism, etc. This presentation will focus on the identification and ethical management of clinicians’
reactions when working within these specialized fields.
Objectives:
- Participants will be able to explain countertransference as an ethical issue within the treatment
process. - Participants will be able to define key countertransference concepts and potential
manifestations when working with addictive disorders (e.g., substance use, sexual behaviors). - Participants will be able to identify specific strategies for managing countertransference
reactions in an ethically sound manner.
