About this workshop:

Dr. Williams will discuss developmental and mental health concerns related to the excessive use of technology within the children and adolescent populations. Recent research in this area will be reviewed as well as the treatment implications for excessive technology use.

About the speaker:

Dr. Williams completed her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS. She completed her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Pine Grove Behavioral Health & Addiction Services in Hattiesburg, MS. Dr. Williams has been treating children, adolescents and adults at Pine Grove for almost 10 years in residential, partial hospitalization, and outpatient levels of care. Dr. Williams also supervises student externs from the University of Southern Mississippi in providing assessment and behavioral consultation with children and adolescents on the child/adolescent inpatient unit and pediatric outpatient rehabilitation center.

Objectives:

  1. Describe what the current research literature says about the impact of excessive technology use on children and adolescents.
  2. List the risks and benefits of technology use within this population.
  3. Identify when excessive use of technology is a problem and what can be done to help.

Target Audience:

The target audience will consist of professional clinicians in the mental health and addiction fields including counselors, nursing staff, social workers, psychologists, and therapists. Information will be presented at an intermediate level.

Continuing Education:

Psychology: (1.5 CE Hours) Pine Grove is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Pine Grove maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Mississippi Social Work: (1.5 CE Hours) (Provider DP #SWB12013) Pine Grove is approved as a provider for continuing education by the MBOE & MFT (08/24/18 through 08/24/20). Social workers will receive 1.5 CE hours in participating in this course (Clinical 1.5_ / Supervision___ /Cultural Competency___/ Ethics ___ /General ___).
