Those who struggle with addiction after age 60 can now find specially tailored help in the Hub City.

Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services opened its new Legacy service last month, an addiction treatment program designed specifically for those struggling with alcohol, prescription medication and illicit drug dependency.

The newly-renovated wing of Pine Grove will treat older adults for 60 days, or longer, if needed. The facility offers eight beds for detox and 16 beds for residential care.

Debbie Sanford, chief officer of behavioral health services at Pine Grove, said the idea came from an increasing number of older patients.

“We just saw a need for having an age-specific program for older adults,” Sanford said. She said as the population ages, addiction treatment specialists now see more patients with prolonged substance use and that’s one of the key differences in the Legacy program.
