Co-Occurring Disorder and Eating Disorder Treatment
A PINE GROVE PROGRAM
Eating disorders often occur in tandem with alcoholism or chemical dependency. Those in need of treatment for bulimia or compulsive overeating often have an underlying issue for which they have turned to alcohol, drugs or prescription medications as a means of coping. This results in a dual diagnosis, of both an eating disorder and an addiction. In order to achieve a long-lasting recovery, the patient must be evaluated holistically and the disordered eating and addictive behaviors must be addressed and treated.
At Pine Grove, women with co-occurring disorders are treated in the Women’s Center, which is committed to gender-responsive treatment and specializes in integrated therapy of eating disorders and chemical dependency. The woman who comes to stay at Pine Grove will be welcomed to a facility committed to the precepts of “Sanctuary, Refuge, Shelter and Safety” for the duration of her treatment.
At Pine Grove, treatment for co-occurring disorders draws from a variety of approaches and
perspectives, which can include the integration of socio-cultural, feminist, 12-step, medical and
psychiatric approaches. Pine Grove’s approach to treating the dual diagnosis patient involves
treating the whole person, and separates treatment into several progressive stages:
Treatment Team
Treating patients with co-occurring disorders requires a variety of approaches to meet the needs of the individual. In addition to highly trained clinical staff that specializes in both the treatment of eating disorders and chemical addictions, Pine Grove provides a staff of professionals including a registered dietician, recreational counselor, and yoga instructor to ensure that healthy eating and lifestyle are also taught.
Co-Occuring Disorder Treatment and Aftercare
As a complement to the typical three-month residential treatment program, Pine Grove offers a full year of aftercare recommendations through its partnership with an innovative industry leader that has over 15 years of experience in case management. The holistic approach to treating co-occurring disorders, and the provision of integrated treatments that specifically address the complex interplay of eating disorders and chemical addiction, ensure that the best tools to live a life free of addiction and eating disorders have been taught, and that the patient receives the support they need to both break free of the disorders and remain in recovery.
