Current Interns' Perspectives on the Southern Mississippi Psychology Internship Consortium (SMPIC)

2006-2007 Interns’ Perspectives

Consultation Projects

Rachel Butler… “I prepared a presentation for a rural Head Start agency in Columbia, MS.  The presentation educated parents and providers about the relationship between stress and child abuse.  The parents and providers were given multiple stress management techniques and taught effective means of discipline.  They were also briefed on the warning signs of sexual abuse and its lasting consequences.”

Shanavia Dansby…“My consultation project evaluated a Head Start Program for children ages 3 to 5.  I developed behavior management plans for 5 students with identified behavior problems and social problems.  The goal of the intervention was to improve the children’s behavior and social functioning.”

Jennifer Fennell…“For my project I consulted with the Schafer Center for Crisis Intervention.  Together we designed an outreach project for the Hattiesburg community on Sexual Assault Awareness Day.  I designed a workshop, held during the day, called “Friends Helping Friends”.  The workshop was designed to educate friends about how they can help a friend who has been sexually assaulted and gave information on how to prevent sexual assaults.”

Experiences on Various Rotations

Adult Psychology

Dr. Paterson helps to make the transition from student to intern a memorable and non-threatening experience.

This is a wonderful opportunity to conduct group therapy with chronically mentally ill patients.  The supervisor will encourage the clinician to practice skills of confrontation in an empathic and supportive manner.

On the Adult Psychology rotation, I had the opportunity to enhance my skills in group therapy and work with a severely mentally ill population.

Addictions Rotation:  Gentle Path

Eye-opening experience about the diagnosis and treatment of sexual addiction.

Provided me with insight about my level of comfort in working with a specialized group of an under-studied population.  In addition, this rotation afforded me the opportunity to receive and seek a level of supervision I have never had in my years of training.

A unique experience.

Child and Adolescent Rotation (Pine Belt MHCR)

This rotation provided me the opportunity to develop my clinical skills and organizational skills.  In addition, I was able to work with clients from various ethnic backgrounds.

Challenging setting with a lot of learning opportunities with a clientele much in need of clinical services.

Good preparation for any new clinician eager to work in a community mental health setting.

Addictions Rotation:  Professional Enhancement Program

It’s great!

Challenging, confrontational approach to treating impaired professionals, many of whom are narcissistic and avoidant.

A truly distinctive and challenging population to work with.  The work with these clients was rewarding and the most unique experience I’ve had in a clinical setting.
